ULR-200 Rotary Evaporator – Manual, Setup & Operation Guide

Installation, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting guidance for the USA Lab ULR-200 Rotary Evaporator

Download the Full ULR-200 User Manual (PDF)

Always retain a copy of the manual near the equipment for reference.

Overview

The ULR-200 Rotary Evaporator is a laboratory-scale system designed for efficient and controlled solvent evaporation under reduced pressure. It is commonly used for solvent recovery, sample concentration, purification, and preparation in chemical, pharmaceutical, biological, and food-related laboratories.

The system operates by rotating an evaporating flask in a temperature-controlled heating bath while applying vacuum. This creates a thin liquid film that improves evaporation efficiency while reducing thermal stress on samples. Solvent vapors are condensed and collected in a receiving flask for reuse or disposal.

This article provides a practical overview of the ULR-200 and links to the full user manual, which should always be consulted before installation or operation.

Intended Use

The ULR-200 Rotary Evaporator is intended for laboratory-scale evaporation and solvent recovery only. It is not designed for continuous industrial processing or operation outside of its specified temperature, vacuum, and material limits.

Use of the equipment outside its intended purpose may result in unsafe operating conditions or damage to the system.

Safety Summary

Before installing or operating the ULR-200, users should review all safety information in the full manual. Key safety considerations include:

  • The ULR-200 is not explosion-proof and must not be used in classified hazardous locations

  • Do not leave the system running unattended

  • Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including eye protection and gloves

  • Inspect all glassware before use; do not operate with cracked or damaged components

  • Use only approved fluids in the heating bath

  • Repairs and servicing must be performed by qualified personnel

Failure to follow safety instructions may result in injury, equipment damage, or reduced performance.

System Components

The ULR-200 Rotary Evaporator system includes:

Installation & Setup Overview

Pre-Installation Checklist

Before assembly:

  • Verify all components are present and undamaged

  • Inspect glassware for cracks or chips

  • Clean and dry all joints and sealing surfaces

  • Prepare a stable, level, and well-ventilated workspace

  • Confirm electrical supply matches the unit’s specifications

Key Installation Requirements

  • All glass joints and oil seals must be greased prior to assembly

  • The main body and heating bath require dedicated electrical circuits

  • Vacuum and cooling lines must be free of sharp bends or restrictions

  • Maintain 12–16 inches (300–400 mm) of clearance around the unit

Assembly Summary

Installation includes:

  1. Positioning the main body and heating bath

  2. Verifying vapor duct installation

  3. Installing oil seals and condenser

  4. Attaching evaporating and receiving flasks

  5. Connecting temperature probe, vacuum, and chiller lines

  6. Completing electrical connections

Detailed, illustrated installation steps are provided in the full manual.

Operating Guidelines

Heating Bath Fluids

Recommended heating bath fluids based on operating temperature:

  • Up to ~80 °C: Distilled or deionized water

  • ~80–95 °C: High-glycol water mixture (≈90% glycol) or silicone oil

Never operate the heating bath empty. Maintain fluid level below the rim to allow for thermal expansion.

Basic Operating Flow

  1. Fill and pre-heat the heating bath

  2. Start the chiller and vacuum system

  3. Set rotation speed

  4. Apply vacuum gradually

  5. Monitor evaporation and solvent recovery

  6. Return the system to atmospheric pressure before shutdown

Always allow components to cool before handling.

Maintenance & Care

Routine maintenance helps ensure long-term performance and reliability:

  • Clean glassware and condenser regularly

  • Inspect and grease seals as needed

  • Check vacuum integrity periodically

  • Clean and replace heating bath fluids as required

  • Replace worn or damaged components promptly

Poor maintenance may result in vacuum leaks, reduced efficiency, or component failure.

Troubleshooting Overview

If the system is not performing as expected, common causes include:

  • Poor vacuum performance: Dry, worn, or improperly seated seals

  • Slow evaporation: Incorrect bath temperature, low rotation speed, or insufficient vacuum

  • Unexpected shutdowns: Electrical supply issues or safety protections triggered

Refer to the troubleshooting section of the manual for detailed guidance.

Technical Information

Detailed technical specifications, materials of construction, ambient operating conditions, solvent reference tables, spare parts, and warranty information are included in the full user manual.
